Escape Toronto on a Houseboat this Summer

Toronto is an amazing city but let’s not kid ourselves, Ontario is a massive province and it is awesome! Ontario probably has the most number of lakes and rivers in Canada so if you drive in almost any direction in Toronto for over an hour, you’ll stop seeing endless skyscrapers and start seeing more trees, lakes and rivers. While many people all drive to their cottages every Friday and return every Sunday contributing to insane traffic jams, it makes you want to do anything to avoid it.

Cue the houseboats

Houseboating is a great way to escape the big smoke where you can immerse yourself in forests, lakes and rivers. Just to be clear, these houseboats are boats that have rooms you sleep in and you drive the houseboat to almost anywhere you want. These boats have most of the amenities you’d find in a house: toilet and shower, fridge, stove, sink, beds and of course electricity because you’ll need to power up your phones so you can share your pics on Facebook and Instagram so your friends and family get jealous.

What are some of the activities you can get into on a houseboat?

      Swimming

      Fishing

      Hiking

      Cooking

      Sun tanning

      Reading

      Relaxing

Do whatever you feel like on your houseboat. You don’t need everyone into fishing or whatever it is. Just relax, enjoy the sites and sounds that make you forget about city life. You can learn more about houseboating at canadahouseboating.ca.

When to go houseboating

The spots you can go near Toronto gives you a window from late May to early October to go houseboating. When you go houseboating, you can rent the boats for a weekend, weekdays or for an entire week. If you go at any time other than a weekend, then you’ll have avoided all the rush hour traffic that always puts a damper to the end of the weekend.

When to book

Just as important in planning your trip, call the houseboat rental companies as soon as you can. By early summer, most of the houseboats are fully booked so the earlier you call to reserve, the better chance you have at securing a houseboat.

Houseboating in the Kawartha Lakes

The Kawarthas is about 2 hour drive to get to from Toronto. The main town you’ll aim for is called Bobcaygeon. There are 3 companies located in this lake system but the 2 that are the most popular ones are Happy Days Houseboats and Egan Houseboats. The 3rd one is called R&R Houseboats although they have less than favourable Google reviews. Happy Days is better known for their larger sized houseboats and luxury models while Egan are better known for their smaller boats which are perfect for a couple or a small group of say 4 people. Egan houseboats do have ones that can sleep more than 4 people but usually you’ll see couples or 4 people on these boats and the rates are more than reasonable. This is where adventures.io has launched their first affiliate and networking event on a houseboat so if you want to learn about affiliate marketing or blockchain tech, check out their houseboat business retreats.

1000 Islands Houseboating

A longer drive than the Kawarthas is to 1000 Islands where you’ll be heading to a small town called Gananoque. The main company operating here is called Houseboat Holidays and they have been operating in the area for a long time. This area is very unique and very scenic. There are many Torontonians that have heard of 1000 Islands but have never been. This area is a must-see place as it is at the east end of Lake Ontario where the lake transforms into the St Lawrence river which is one of the biggest and longest rivers in the world. As you trek eastward of Gananoque, you’ll see endless islands where many have amazing cottages that make you just want to buy the next one you see on the market.
